LEARN BY DOING

Volunteer with us and learn permaculture

Join us on the Eco-Farm! Usually, the best way to learn is by doing. Get a taste of the many things a farmer does while preparing and growing seasonal plantings of vegetables, greens, medicinal and culinary herbs, fruits, trees, and cover crops. No experience is necessary.

Our Expecations for Longer-Term Visitors

I welcome you to my home as a visitor. I love meeting new people and having cultural and idea exchanges. We welcome visitors who are interested in learning about permaculture farming and want to share this lifestyle and chores, which might take around four to six hours a day. Chores could vary, depending on your interests, but could include normal activities such as planting, harvesting, weeding, preserving the harvest, mowing, pruning, animal care, creating raised garden beds, handyman repairs and similar. We provide room and board to our longer-term visitors.

Some Details for Volunteers.

We’d love to have you (but we cannot handle everyone who wants to volunteer). So we have some details that you should know before you come. Here are some of them.

WHEN ARE VOLUNTEERS NEEDED?

Pretty much anytime, although winter time is really slow, so we may just wait until the Spring.

SUGGESTED LENGTH OF STAY

Pretty flexible. A week or two might work out well, but there is always a day or two of activities, or if we get along, and you are a good fit, longer might work out.

CHILDREN OR PETS

A well behaved, quiet dog would be ok, but you would need to keep the dog under your control at all times, and bring the dog with you if you leave our property. This area has coyotes and stray dogs which could hurt a loose dog. You would need to pay for any damage your dog causes. I don’t think that we are ready for children just yet.

ACCOMODATIONS

You would have many options for your stay from camping outside to camping inside or if you can help get the next bunk room finished, you would have a perfect place to stay inside with a bathroom, bed and mini-kitchen. Shared full bathroom. Right now, we do have availability in the “Principal’s Office” suite, an 800-square-foot apartment with a full kitchen and elegant bathroom. The apartment has a queen bed, plus a couch and coffee table. Our next lodging projects include a loft apartment and a bunk room and each would have its own bathroom.

We Love our Longer-Term Visitors

We can’t wait to meet you. We are an “all hands on deck” kinda place and that brings us closer together. Nobody is any better than anyone else. Mutual respect.

Even More Details…

We cover a lot of ground here. Our activities at Brasstown Eco-Farm include Permaculture, Food preservation, Sowing, Harvesting, Landscaping, Pruning, Seed saving, Seeding/transplanting, Construction projects, Weeding, Yoga.

TRANSPORTATION OPTIONS

It would be best if you had a car. If not, we may be able to pick you up in Chattanooga, TN, Asheville, NC or Atlanta, GA. We are just about 2.5 hours from each of those cities.

LANGUAGES SPOKEN

English, Greek, and basic Spanish

MEALS

We eat a variety of foods including American, Greek, and Italian. Omnivores, vegans, and vegetarians who can eat with meat-eaters and share cooking pans are welcome. Usually for breakfast and lunch everyone cooks for themselves, and we eat dinner together.

NEARBY ACTIVITIES & FUN

Outdoor activities, primarily. Hiking on the Appalachian Trail or other trails, lots of waterfalls, boating or swimming at lakes, white water rafting on the Nantahala OR Ocoee Rivers. Most are about 30 to 60 minutes away. Two hours to any big city. One hour and a half to the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Close to home we have the John C. Campbell Folk School with dancing twice a week and free concerts. Murphy, NC has a casino.
